Not only "Caput Mundi": this summer Rome will be also the Capital of one of the most loved sports, the swimming, for more than two weeks. From the 18th of July to the 2nd of August 2009 reflectors will point on the Eternal City, theatre of the XIIth edition of World Swimming championships. For the second time the FINA World championshipss will take place in the most beautiful city of the world, that can praise a long and prestigious tradition in sports and water sports above all.

To give you a glance of the importance of this great "national event" (so defined by the Italian Govern), is worth to read significant numbers: in 16 days (the duration of the championships) 2.800 athletes will challenge for thropy, prizes and records. Naturally both the organizational effort and the media attention couldn't be weak for such an appointment: more than 1500 technicians and delegates, 2500 volunteers and 1500 juornalists.

PLACES OF CHALLENGES

The nerve centre of the world swimming championships is the Foro Italico: as soon as received the assignment, the city applied itself in a restyling work that, although many difficulties, should be ready when decided, to assure a challenge place on a level with the event, and worthy of such a beautiful and loved city.

After hosting Olimpic Games in Rome in 1960 ( when the men's team "Settebello" won gold in water polo) and above-mentioned World Chapmpionship 1994 ( in that edition there were successes in men's water polo, a bronze medal for the women's water polo team and a bronze medal in swimming 200 metres in backstroke), the striking landscape of the Foro Italico will se the fierce care of the Italian team, that gave us many satisfactions.

But the will for victories isn't going to calm down, and many athletes from Italy are searching for moments of glory to go down in swimming history, a very noble sport that deserves to reach and involve as many young as it can.

Four permanent swimming pools for four competitions: swimming, dives, synchronized swimming and water polo. More than 400.000 visitors are expected for 16 days of challenges, and received in the Hospitality Village, renamed for the occasion Village Roma09, inside the Foro Italico: a perfectlty arranged area to conciliate in the best way every chance of relaxation, meeting, amusement, that however are part of the sport contest.

Ostia, fix landmark of the Latium coast, instead, is the area where the 13th FINA World championshipss will take place: in the sea (considered the Rome one) are programmed the free-swimming challenges, 5 km for mens and womens, and the "marathon" of 25 km (24th and 25th of July).

DISCIPLINES

Swimming, open water swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, these are the disciplines that will attract the sport lovers in the Capital. Let's see each on a little bit closer..

Swimming
Swimming is a sport with no need for presentations, but we must remember that has always given great satisfaction to our Country: developed in the course of the nineteenth century, has been invluded since the beginning in the schedule of the Olympic Games. Just Rome was one of the places where born the first associations. At the time, the competitions were held on lakes and rivers. Only in 1908 swimmers began to compete in a kind of pool built inside the athletic track.

Swimming in open water
Only in recent years swimming in open water has been recognized between the official sport of the International Federation of Swimming (just think that last year for the first time was included for the first time between the Olympic disciplines in Beijing): nearly 200 years since Giovanni Maria Salati crossed the English Channel swimming, even today men and women are in challenge with the open water and unpredictable seas and rivers each time for an epic and unforgettable achievement.

Diving
Another discipline that was born between the late 800's and the beginning of twentieth century is that of diving, at the beginning from highcliffs or bridges, then from transitional blocks in wood , and at the end from classics trampolines. Also that kind of spectacular sport gave so many satisfactions to Italy: two bigchampions are Carlo and Giorgio Dibiasi Cagnotto (and now his daughter Tania) for instance, although probably the greatest diver of all time remains the American Greg Louganis.

Waterpool
The history of Italian water polo is really so rich of unforgettable moments. Our Country praises and old tradition in this discipline. That's why there are so many enthusiasts who thrill to the exciting challenges of the teams battling for the podium. The games are divided into four periods lasting eight minutes each: at the end no way, you have to win or lose .. with "Settebello" (as the Italian male team is known) and "Setterosa" (the female one), we are luckily well used.

Synchronized Swimming
If there is a spectacular discipline, well, that is the synchronized swimming: the choreographic movements into the water, conquered a true and important role among water sports just around the middle of last century. There are three kinds of competition: individual, duo and team contests (each one is composed by eight players). A great show, with incredible performances and striking visual impact.
