The Monument to Mazzini

To mark the centenary of the short-lived Roman Republic, in 1949 a was erected in the Piazzale dell'Aventino where it looks onto the Valle Murcia. A great thinker and republican politician, Mazzini had his name linked to the city of Rome in 1849 when he took part in the triumvirate with Carlo Armellini and Aurelio Saffi and set to work for a Republican Constitution for Rome.

This would be the inspiration for a constitution and model for later solutions to church-state relations. Mazzini resigned on July 5, 1849, hurling his last proclamation to the Romans when he said "Your assembly is not over, it has merely dispersed.
Your Triumvirate, albeit their public activities are suspended for "force majeure", reserves the right to choose a more opportune moment to reconvene the assembly." On July 12, Mazzini left for exile. From this spot you can enjoy a view across to the ruins of the Imperial palaces on the Palatine Hill.
